Abstract

People with mental disorders often experience greater stigma and discrimination from the surrounding community than individuals who suffer from other medical illnesses. This treatment is caused by ignorance or misunderstanding from family or community members regarding mental disorders. This study aims to determine the relationship between knowledge about mental disorders and public attitudes towards people with mental disorders in the working area of the Kumun Health Center. This research is non- experimental and descriptive descriptive. The research population is people who live in the working area of the Kumun Health Center. The research sample was 94 people using Random Sampling technique. The research instrument was a questionnaire. Hypothesis testing using the Kendall Tau test. The results of calculations using the SPSS 17.00 for windows program obtained a correlation coefficient (τ) of 0.014 with a significance value (p-value) of 0.008. The conclusions of the study are: (1) the knowledge of respondents in the working area of the Kumun Health Center about mental disorders is in the category of low knowledge, (2) the attitude of the respondents in the working area of the Kumun Health Center towards people with mental disorders is more negative or unsupportive, (3) there is a significant relationship between knowledge about mental disorders and public attitudes towards people with mental disorders in the working area of the Kumun Health Center. The better the public's knowledge about mental disorders, the more positive the attitude of the community towards people with mental disorders.
